About the event:
This one day professional development event has been designed to enhance your public engagement skills through the delivery of training sessions at various levels from working with schools to co-producing your research with members of the public.
Our high profile keynote speakers will talk about the importance of public engagement for researchers.
You will then have the chance to choose to attend 2 out of 4 possible informative short workshops facilitated by leading science communication and community engagement practitioners in the areas of:
- Ideas and creativity
- Evaluating public engagement activities
- Working with different audiences
- Exploring the levels of public engagement
You will have plenty of time during the extended lunch break to browse our Public Engagement Opportunities Zone. Here you will have the chance to develop a partnership with one of our exhibitors and apply for funding of up to £1000 with proposals to develop public engagement activity together (see below for further details). The Zone will feature a whole host of resources and people involved in public engagement to help you find out what’s out there and what opportunities are suitable for you.
For the remainder of the day you will attend one of the following workshops which are delivered according to your experience as a public engagement practitioner:
- Getting started with public engagement
- Building upon your public engagement activity
- Public engagement masterclass
The engaging researcher seed funding:
A £5,000 seed fund will be made available from the Manchester Beacon to support new collaborative partnerships between researchers attending ‘The Engaging Researcher’ on 6 July 2010, and organisations offering public engagement opportunities e.g. museums, galleries and festivals.
Partnerships will be invited to apply for up to £1,000 with proposals to develop public engagement activity to encourage, develop and sustain knowledge exchange, and to provide opportunities for researchers to engage with the public in a supported manner.
More details and time to network and create new partnerships will be available during the event.
