Do you ever feel you missed an opportunity to make a contact that could be useful later? We all know that networking matters, but most of us do it as best we can when an opportunity arises and hope for the best. Academic networking has its own contexts and etiquette, but the principles are the same whatever the context. Kieran Murphy’s fascinating career has depended on his ability to transfer the skills he developed on board ships into new situations. This is a chance to hear from an expert how to go about networking strategically, without coming across as ‘too pushy’. The talk will cover:
– The Approach to Networking – this topic covers how we all usually think about networking and how it’s a skill that can be learned.
– How to Network – this discusses actual application of learned networking skills in a public place
– Why do we Network – if you’re networking to get something from someone, that’s the wrong approach. This talk will explain why.
– How to make the most of networking tools like LinkedIn.
