There is no room for ‘just’. This is a word we often use in an apologetic way such as ‘I was just calling’ or ‘I was just emailing.’ When we use ‘just’ in this way we are not being confident – in fact we are decreasing confidence levels by justifying our reason or approach. Banish ‘just’ from your vocabulary. Instead, substitute it for more positive and confident wording such as ‘I have a query/favour/something to ask….’ This way you are setting out your aim and what you want, rather than apologising for it before you start. ‘Just’ goes both ways. Others may ask you for ‘just a quick word’ or ‘can you just do something’ consider these requests before responding to them. They may be an interruption, do you want to deal with it straight away? If not, say so. Your time and energy is as important as theirs. Confidence includes being assertive and also seeing that you are as significant and worthwhile as anyone else.
